Impacts of synthetic [plastic] turf.
Mosman Parks & Bushland fought determinedly with the HPG to keep natural turf on Middle Head Oval.
Our main objective is the protection of Mosman’s natural environment and public land. The new natural turf installation has been a success, local sporting groups are delighted with the improved sports field. We congratulate Mosman Council.
Supporting an ecosystem.
Natural grass grows in soil which supports invertebrates which support birdlife. With bird species and bird numbers in decline everywhere including in Mosman, the natural turf will help maintain food sources.
Saving public land for multiple uses.
There are other users of a sports field. When it is not used for games, people walk and run, and children play. Public land is for the general public, not just one section.
Other environmental concerns.
Algaecides and moss killers are used in the maintenance of plastic turf.
Plastic turf only lasts for about 8 years. Where does it go – into landfill?
How safe is plastic turf in a bushfire prone area.
Grass, being photosynthetic, provides oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide.
Grass lowers air temperature; plastic grass is hot! Natural grass lowers temperatures, plastic grass is significantly hotter.
Synthetic turf areas do not have the permeability of grass. The impact of large areas offering minimal permeability pose significant problems in urbanised areas. Microplastics will run off into the surrounding environment and waterways.
